The tires are some of the most undervalued Volkswagen parts on your vehicle. Properly maintaining tires means checking them occasionally and replacing them when they’re worn out. As part of our Volkswagen Parts 101 series, here are nine signs you need new tires, courtesy of Patrick Volkswagen.
Worn Treads
After a while, your tire treads will wear down. This reduces grip, which leads to worse traction on the road.
Bulging Tires
Tires with abnormal bubbles or bulges are likely to blow out. Replace any tires with bumps or air bubbles immediately.
Shaking While Driving
Does your car shake or vibrate when you’re driving? Your tire could be the issue; it should be replaced ASAP.
Cracked Tires
If you notice cracks in your tires, the rubber is drying out and fading. If you don’t replace a cracked tire, it could cause a blowout.
Uneven Wear
One of your tires may be more worn than the others. Rotating your tires prevents this issue by promoting even wear.
Tire Pressure Warning
Has your tire pressure warning light turned on? If so, you likely have a leaky tire. This tire should be repaired or replaced immediately.
Constant Inflating
Inflating a tire with low air pressure occasionally is fine. If you’re filling it up constantly, it may be time to replace that tire.
Smoke
“Burning rubber” isn’t good for your tires. If you notice any smoke coming from your tire, it must be replaced.
Old Tires
Tires have a lifespan of about six to ten years. Once a tire passes this milestone, a new one should be installed.
