Odds are that your windshield wipers worked overtime the last few months. With all the snow, sleet, and freezing rain we got in the Auburn area, wipers proved to be invaluable. But, like other Volkswagen parts, windshield wiper blades do eventually wear down and need to be replaced. Here are some signs telling you that you need a new set.
1. They Don’t Help Your Visibility Much
Wipers are intended to clear your windshield so you can see the road better. If they leave streaks or otherwise aren’t doing much to improve your visibility, they aren’t doing their job properly.
2. They’re Cracked or Frayed
Depending on their usage, windshield wiper blades only generally last a year or two. Even if they aren’t used a lot, due to heat and the rays of the sun, the rubber will crack and tear.
3. Scraping Sounds
When your wiper blades are in good shape, they shouldn’t make much of a noise at all. If there’s a scraping sound, this could mean that part of the plastic is rubbing against the glass.
4. They’re Not Getting Every Spot
Are their certain parts of your windshield that the wiper blades just aren’t clearing? This is another sign that they have worn out.
5. They Don’t Always Work
Finally, if the wipers are temperamental and may not always turn on, clearly this is a problem. This may not necessarily have to do with the wipers themselves, but it could be a mechanical issue that needs to be addressed.
