If you decide to purchase an EV Volkswagen model, then you need to know its range. An electric driving range tells you just how far a vehicle can drive before it needs to find a charging station. Here's what Patrick Volkswagen customers need to know!

Electric Driving Range

Both plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles can have an electric driving range. A plug-in hybrid, or PHEV, generally has a pretty short range for all-electric driving. It might be able to travel 15 to 25 miles on a charged battery, ideal for short local trips but not much else.

An electric vehicle needs a longer range though, since it doesn't have a backup tank of gasoline to boast about. It just has a battery pack. As an example, let's look at the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. After being subjected to a variety of tests by the manufacturer and government agencies, this EV has an EPA-estimated electric driving range of up to 275 miles.

How Your Range is Determined

Generally, an EV's range is determined by the size of its battery pack. The amount of power produced by the electric motors can also have an effect. Some models are even available with different drivetrains, like front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. Different variants of the same EV can have different electric driving ranges.

Outside factors can also impact the range. Hot weather can put a lot of pressure on your EV's battery, slightly reducing your range in some cases. Older EVs can start to lose some range as well. Fortunately, these kinds of things generally make a minuscule difference.
